Compress GIF

Make GIFs smaller and keep them animated. Files stay on your device, never uploaded.

How to compress GIF files online

  1. Add your GIF files

Drop GIF files into the box, choose them from your device, or paste them from your clipboard. You can add hundreds at once.

  2. Compress GIF privately on your device

Each GIF is rebuilt on your device so every frame stores only what changes, with a trimmed colour palette. The animation keeps its speed and looping.

  3. Download your smaller GIF files

Save each file on its own, or take them all in one ZIP. Your files stay private: they never leave your device, so there is no upload to wait for.

How GIF compression works

GIFs are large because every frame is stored as its own picture, limited to 256 colours. Most of the saving comes from storing only the part of each frame that changes, and from using a smaller colour palette.

Sanil.app picks the smallest file that still looks the same and keeps the animation playing at its original speed. For far smaller files, an animated WebP or a short video beats any GIF.

Questions about compressing GIF files

Will it still animate?

Yes. An animated GIF stays animated, with the same speed and looping.

Why are GIFs so big?

GIF is an old format with weak compression, so a few seconds of animation can run to many megabytes. Compressing helps, but WebP or video stores the same clip in much less space.

Does it work on a GIF that doesn't move?

Yes, though a still GIF has less to save than an animation.

How do I make a GIF small enough to send or post?

Compress it here first. If it is still too large, convert the clip to an animated WebP or a short video, which store the same animation in much less space than any GIF.

Are my GIF files private?

Yes. Sanil.app compresses your GIF files on your device, so they are never uploaded and never reach a server. They stay yours.
