Why is AVIF slower than JPG?
AVIF compresses harder, which takes more processing, and it all happens on your device. Large photos take longer than the same photo as a JPG or WebP.
Which browsers show AVIF?
Current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge. Offer a JPG or WebP fallback for older browsers.
Can I open the result in my photo editor?
Support is growing but not universal. If you plan to edit the image, keep the original.
Is AVIF smaller than WebP and JPG?
For photos, usually yes: AVIF tends to be smaller than WebP, and WebP smaller than JPG, at similar quality. How much depends on the image. AVIF is also the slowest of the three to encode.
